Acute care after rape

If you have experienced rape, you should seek medical treatment immediately. You can also have a confidential forensic examination carried out and we will call you for counseling if you wish. All of this happens without a police report.

I have been raped. What should I do?

If you have been raped no more than three days (72 hours) ago, get medical treatment as soon as possible. Even if injuries are often not visible on the outside, rape is a medical emergency. Medical confidentiality applies to doctors and hospital staff. This means that the doctors on site are not allowed to call the police without your consent. It is important to know that a report to the police about rape automatically triggers the filing of charges. However, only you can and should decide this. Your health insurance company will not receive any information about the rape either. The examination and medical treatment are free of charge for you. You can find a description of what the local care will look like below.

Boys and men are also raped - the services described here naturally also apply to them. Confidential evidence collection and storage for one year also applies.

Where do I need to go?

Contact the Women's Clinic at the University Hospital UKGM on the Lahnberge in Marburg. You are welcome to take a trusted person with you for support. If you do not understand German or are dependent on assistance, please bring appropriate support with you. If this is not possible, please contact the Frauennotruf Marburg before your visit to the hospital. To avoid long waiting times at the hospital, call in advance if possible and inform them that you are seeking care after rape. However, it is also possible to come without an appointment. If possible, please bring your vaccination record with you.

What will happen in hospital?

You will be believed in hospital.

You only have to say as much as is important for the examination. Your health comes first. You will be thoroughly examined in hospital. The doctors will test you for sexually transmitted infections and take blood and urine samples. If necessary, a pregnancy test will be carried out. This examination is free of charge. Costs for medication such as the "morning after pill" can be covered by the Frauennotruf Marburg. For a follow-up examination, the doctors will arrange another appointment with you or refer you to a registered gynecology practice. If you need support in arranging an appointment (prompt appointment/interpreting/etc.), you are welcome to contact the Frauennotruf Marburg. In all other cases, you can of course simply go to your usual gynecological practice.

On request, it is possible for the doctors to secure traces and evidence at the clinic.

If you are not yet sure whether you want to press charges or not, the doctors on site will ask you whether you would like to secure evidence confidentially. These traces can serve as important evidence if you later decide to press charges. It is best for the forensics if you do not shower before the examination and keep your clothes on. Alternatively, you can bring these, as well as any hygiene articles, bed linen or other items on which traces may be found, with you to the examination.

The test is free of charge for you. The samples taken will be saved for one year and stored at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Giessen. In the case of minors, the retention period only begins from the age of 18. After this period, the secured samples will be destroyed - you will not be informed of this again.

Come to us for counseling.

You will be made aware of our counseling services at the clinic. If you wish, we will call you for a telephone consultation. You must give your consent for this at the clinic. However, you are also welcome to contact us by phone or email and arrange a consultation appointment. You decide what and how much you want to tell us. If you prefer not to tell us what happened, that's fine too. Sometimes it helps just to talk about how you are feeling and what your worries and fears are.

During counseling, you can also think about the next steps, e.g. whether you want to press charges, how those around you can support you, etc.
